Lappeenranta is the administrative, business and cultural centre of the South Karelia region. The eleventh-largest Finnish city by number of inhabitants, Lappeenranta is a city renowned for its friendly and good-humoured people, its natural beauty, its happy Karelian character and its good prospects for the future.

Lappeenranta was founded in 1649 and has today a population of 59 000. The town covers an area of 848 km2.

Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is a national university of technology and economics, financed by the Ministry of Education. LUT's areas of strength are related to forest industry and metal clusters, electrical engineering, energy, economics as well as to information and communication technology and expertise in Russia.

Bus routes 1, 3 and 5 from City Centre take you to the University. Take a bus from City Centre labeled as "Keskusta -Yliopisto". The University is the last stop on every route. Busses leave from Valtakatu Street, opposite the Central Park.
