Vyborg

The theme of the conference is technology and rethinking European borders. Academically this theme can be discussed in the lecture rooms, but we want to offer the opportunity to experience it in practice by visiting the real border.
Please be sure to check the visa instructions

Lappeenranta is located only about 30 kilometres from the Finnish – Russian border, which is also the eastern border of the European Union. Therefore the Tension of Europe Lappeenranta 2006 conference will spend one day crossing the border and visiting the old Finnish town of Vyborg, which is now located in Russia.

We will leave early in the morning by bus for a full experience of the border controls. In Vyborg, Russia, we will have lunch in the famous Round Tower and then move to Aalto Library for the sessions. After the sessions there will be some time reserved to walk in the city. Our return trip will be cruise through the Saimaa Canal back to Lappeenranta, during which dinner will be served on board.

Please visit the links and get more information about Vyborg and its long history. We also recommend the trip to the accompanying persons. The spring is the best time of the year to see the old ‘happy’ Vyborg and experience the beautiful canal cruise back to Lappeenranta.

Please see also the programme for the Saturday Round Table sessions and the key note speech.
